Description
The Apple 70W USB-C Power Adapter (model A2743) is Apple's compact GaN charger, introduced at WWDC23 alongside the 15-inch MacBook Air. It delivers up to 70W from a single USB-C port using USB Power Delivery, so it can charge MacBooks, iPads and iPhones. It suits MacBook Air owners in particular, as Apple lists it for fast charging MacBook Air models from 2022 onwards to about 50% in around 30 minutes. It replaced Apple's 67W adapter while being smaller and offering more power.
Key features
- 70W from one USB-C port. The adapter is rated at 70W, labelled as 20.6V at 3.4A. A single USB-C port keeps the design simple and powerful enough for most MacBook Air and MacBook Pro charging.
- MacBook Air fast charging. Apple lists it for fast charging MacBook Air (2022 or later) with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or a USB-C charge cable. Apple quotes up to 50% battery in around 30 minutes, and says it is required to fast charge the 15-inch MacBook Air.
- GaN technology. It is Apple's second GaN charger, using a GaN FET from GaN Systems, the same model found in Apple's 140W adapter. This allows a smaller body than the previous 67W charger while delivering more output.
- Compact build. Measured at about 65 x 65 x 28.5mm and about 165g, it sits between Apple's 30W and older 67W adapters in size. Power density is about 0.6W/cm³.
- USB Power Delivery profiles. It supports PD3.0 and DCP, with fixed profiles of 5V 3A, 9V 3A, 15V 3A and 20.6V 3.4A. This covers Macs, iPads and iPhones from one charger.
- Efficient and cool running. ChargerLAB rated its standby power consumption and conversion efficiency as top-tier, with ripple and temperature well controlled. Best Buy's buyer summary notes it does not generate excessive heat during use.
- Detachable plug. The folding plug head is detachable and can be swapped for a two-prong power cord. Universal 100-240V input makes it suitable for use in different countries.
